Riverdale Field Studies

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Riverdale, learning extends well beyond classroom walls. Through thoughtfully designed field studies and trips, students apply what they’re learning in meaningful, real-world contexts—building curiosity, confidence, and connection along the way.

From the fifth-grade trip to Mount St. Helens to volunteering in wildlife areas, Riverdale’s field studies are designed to bring learning to life and deepen students’ understanding of the world around them.

Grade School Field Studies (K-8)

Field studies at Riverdale Grade School are thoughtfully designed to extend classroom learning into real-world settings and grow in depth and independence as students move through the grades. These experiences reinforce core academic skills—such as inquiry, collaboration, and critical thinking—while helping students make meaningful connections between what they study and the world around them.

  • Primary grades (K–2): Students participate in local day trips that spark curiosity and support early learning in science, literacy, and social awareness. Experiences often include hands-on science exploration, outdoor learning, and visits from community partners.

  • Upper elementary (3–5): Field studies become more interdisciplinary and place-based, connecting Oregon history, geography, and science to real sites.

  • Middle grades (6–8): Students take part in extended experiences that emphasize independence, teamwork, and application of learning.

    • Highlights include Outdoor School in 6th grade, a 7th grade coast field study, and an 8th grade capstone trip to Ashland connected to the English curriculum and live theatre at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

High School Field Studies (9-12)

Each spring, Riverdale High School students, faculty, and staff participate in a week-long Field Studies program designed to deepen learning through immersive, experiential opportunities.

These experiential learning opportunities typically take place in March and are a highlight of the high school experience. Students get out of the classrooms, collaborate with peers, and pursue topics and projects aligned with their interests.

Offerings vary each year and often include favorites such as Zodiac sailing, film production, STEM learning at the Marine Center, and other interdisciplinary experiences.

Field Studies opportunities for the 2025-26 school year can be found in the Riverdale High School Field Studies Guide.
