Riverdale High School offers comprehensive college counseling services that are modeled on the practices of the best Independent High Schools. Our college acceptance rate has been outstanding during recent years, and our students are happy with their college choices.
Most students at Riverdale are planning on attending college, and they take their studies seriously. This creates a peer culture that supports college preparation and exploration. Teachers train students in specific skills and habits necessary to succeed in a college environment. Our school counselor and college advisor are available for college and career discussions, and assistance with scheduling choices, internship and independent study opportunities, and “what do I need to do to get into this college” questions.
The college-going culture at Riverdale begins freshman year, when students envision their post-high school futures while filling out their Education Plan and Profile. All students fulfill “core” graduation requirements, but they also have time to design an individualized path toward college acceptance and/or career realization. We want Riverdale students to be the strongest possible candidates to the colleges of their choice.
The tools that all grades use when exploring colleges and careers are:
The PSAT is given during sophomore and junior years. Students sign up for the SAT on their own: this test is not administered at Riverdale. See more on the high school's testing page.
This is a computer program used by Riverdale and thousands of high schools across the nation. Naviance helps students explore college choices and Riverdale uses it to send recommendations, transcripts and reports to colleges when our students apply. Each student will be given a Naviance password. Parents should familiarize themselves with this program as well.
The college selection and application process is outlined at every grade-level parent meeting during the fall of every school year. We have just completed this year’s meetings. In addition, we offer a yearly Financial Aid Night where the entire financial aid application process is outlined in detail.
More than 60 colleges visit the Riverdale College Counseling Center each year. These visitors are usually the admissions personnel who first read our student’s applications. Thus, we take these encounters between student and college representatives very seriously. Colleges will often take “demonstrated interest” into account when considering applicants, and there is no better way to show interest than during a face-to-face meeting.
