The Riverdale School Board is thrilled to announce that Christopher Russo will serve as Riverdale School District’s Superintendent beginning mid-July 2022 with a contract extending through June 2025. Mr. Russo comes to Riverdale with more than 25 years of experience in diverse roles from around the world, serving in places such as Poland, Turkey and England, as well as across the US. Most recently he served as the Director General of American School of Asuncion (ASA) in Paraguay.
Before moving overseas, Chris served as Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning at Portland Public Schools, expanding Advanced Placement (AP) opportunities, Talented and Gifted (TAG) programs and neurodiverse programs as well as optimizing a budget for optimal efficiency from 150 million dollars to include multiple funding sources.
Previously Chris served over 15 years as a teacher, a principal, assistant principal and assistant superintendent at Reynolds School District. While there, he helped develop multi-year master plans for facility expansion and educational design across multiple pedagogies and instructional frameworks. With his extensive experience working in Portland metro area districts, he looks forward to sharing his knowledge of the Oregon school district landscape.
As the Director General of an 800 student pre-K-12 college preparatory school in Paraguay, he expanded STEAM programs, continually improved business practices and expanded service learning opportunities for students. During the pandemic, Chris achieved increasing ASA’s enrollment by 10 percent despite the impacts of COVID.
Chris and his wife, Diana, have two bilingual sons, Owen and Quinn, ages 11 and 15. When Chris isn't working, he’s rock climbing/mountaineering, writing, oil painting, traveling to those hidden gem destinations around the world, as well finding time for a home restoration or two. He looks forward to returning to Portland and getting to know the Riverdale community.
Thank you to our Riverdale staff and community for participating in this interview process. We look forward to beginning our work with Chris this summer.
