Feb. 24 Riverdale Grade School News

The time we have all been waiting for is happening. Beginning Tuesday, March 9 our K-4 students will begin to transition to hybrid. The excitement is contagious as we anxiously await the students arrival. Look for more information to come in following communications. LIPI continues to grow with more than 50 students invited to participate this week. It is pure joy to meet the students and have the building full of student energy. Please join me in welcoming our new staff to Riverdale Grade School. Scroll down and read their brief bios for a glimpse into their experience and passion for education.
Ms. McDonald and Ms. Randall are hard at work collaborating.
Stay positive,
Interim Principal Kendall

New Staff Introductions

Julia Daigneault - K-4 Teacher

Julia comes to Riverdale with over 10 fantastic years of experience teaching 2nd, 4th and 5th grade in Arizona, Washington and Oregon. Most recently she has been working in the North Clackamas School District as a long-term substitute for 4th grade. She also brings with her a broad perspective outside of the field of education as she worked in human resources at a corporate office and in marketing for the San Diego Padres. She brings with her recent professional development experiences in PBIS, Diversity and Social Justice, Diversity in the classroom, I-Ready, Eureka Math and Wonders Reading. Julia is a graduate of California State University, Fullerton and resides in SW Portland with her husband and 14-month-old daughter. Julia loves teaching and is so excited to be at Riverdale!

Reynaldo Hernandez - Grade School Morning Custodian

Reynaldo joined the grade school team this week and is looking forward to working during the day with the joy of having students around. His previous experience included working as a night custodian in the Tigard-Tualatin School District for the past 20 years, which has not afforded the same lively opportunity. He has three sons and two daughters - both of whom work for the Tigard-Tualatin School District. Some of his hobbies include reading, listening to classic and romantic/western orchestral music, and he absolutely loves soccer. Reynaldo is excited for this new experience and to work for Riverdale!

Erin Levine - K-4 Teacher

This is Erin's ninth year of being in the classroom. She has a Master of Arts in teaching from Concordia University-Portland and a Juris Doctor from Willamette University. She worked as an attorney for nine years but really missed the kids and the pure joy of being in the classroom. She has been with Portland Public Schools since 2016, most recently teaching 3rd grade CDL at Atkinson Elementary School. Erin teaches from a foundation of equity and equality, and she embraces and enjoys the cultural heritages that mold us. She’s familiar with much of the curriculum we use, which will certainly ease her transition. Erin is so happy to join our Riverdale team!

Kelsey Smith - K-4 Teacher

Kelsey is joining the Riverdale Grade School team with three years of teaching experience in preschool and kindergarten! Prior to teaching in the classroom, Kelsey worked as one of seven registered behavior technicians for the state of Idaho and an applied behavioral interventionist in homes, schools and clinics. Kelsey is a graduate of Gonzaga University, with degrees in business, general education and special education and comes to Riverdale with professional development experience in PBIS, Early Literacy, Stress & Trauma, and Race & Equity. When she is not being silly with her students in the classroom, Kelsey loves to go hiking, read books, and meet new people. She is thrilled to be joining the Riverdale Grade School team!

Jessica Zapata - K-4 Teacher

Jessica received her undergraduate degree in California in Sociology in 2012 and later on earned her Master of Arts in teaching from Pacific University, Forest Grove in 2020. Prior to teaching, she worked in Behavioral Health for several years, gaining experience in Applied Behavioral Analysis and Special Education. This experience helped her gain skills as a kind and empathetic educator as well as having patience and understanding of diverse learning styles. In her free time she loves hiking with her family in the Columbia River Gorge in search of beautiful waterfalls. She is excited to join the Riverdale Grade School team and anxious to get in the classroom and share her love of learning with students.
