Thank you!

Back to School Night

Dear Families,
Thank you to those of you who were able to attend our virtual Back to School Night. Although we miss being in person, we are thrilled that our attendance was high and feedback was positive. I am so impressed by what teachers are able to do virtually and the support we receive from our families. Thank you to our PTC for providing bags full of treats for each staff member. We are a strong and thoughtful community. I see evidence of this from teachers, students and the community every day.

Excludable Illness Symptoms

  • Excludable symptoms that require your child to stay home or be sent home are the primary symptoms of COVID-19:
- new persistent cough
- shortness of breath
- difficulty breathing
- fever >100.4, chills
- loss of taste or smell
- vomiting
- diarrhea
  • Primary COVID-19 symptoms require the student to either quarantine, or return with a negative COVID-19 test and symptoms improving.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea requires the student to stay home for 48 hours since the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea.
  • New seeping lesions or rash are also excludable symptoms.
  • We will contact you at the time of any excludable symptom occurrence.
Other illness symptoms, such as sore throat, congestion, runny nose, headache, stomach ache, low fever <100.4, do not require that a student stay home or be sent home. The student should stay home if they do not feel well or if they have any primary symptoms. A child with non-primary symptoms should be monitored for development of any primary COVID-19 symptoms. Covid testing is not required to attend school and is only recommended as an additional precaution.

7th & 8th Student Grade Leadership Club

Starting in October, 7th and 8th grade students will be able to participate in a Leadership Club. The club will be taking place every Wednesday during lunch and will be taught by Abby Rotwein, Riverdale School District’s Director of Equity and Inclusion. Abby was a grade school teacher for a decade and has led similar clubs in the past in her previous school district.
In the club, students will:
  • Learn leadership and conflict resolution skills
  • Learn and practice public speaking skills
  • Community building skills
  • Help plan school-wide assemblies
  • Lead school-wide efforts in the garden
  • And more!
If your child would like to participate, please have them complete this survey by Friday, Oct. 1.

Water Bottles

Please make sure your student brings a water bottle labeled with their name to school. We encourage students to bring plastic water bottles as glass ones can break and become a safety hazard.

Car Seats

In an effort to keep our car lines moving, please practice having children buckle their car seats. Each minute adds up! Thank you.

Phones in Middle School

Please remind students that cell phone use is not allowed during school hours. Phones must be kept in backpacks during the day.

REMINDER: K-4 Kimochis Kick-Off

Managing Emotions: How to Talk about Feelings so Kids will Talk about Feelings

We are excited to invite you to our Kimochis Kick-Off Virtual Parent Event on October 7, from 6-7 p.m. What are Kimochis? (Key.Mo.Cheez) means feelings in Japanese and is the social and emotional learning tool we are bringing to Riverdale to help create emotionally strong, connected, and compassionate kids.
Come join Ellen Dodge, the founder and curriculum author of Kimochis and learn some fast, fun, and effective ways to make it easy for your kids to talk about feelings.
Parents will leave with effective communication tools to help your child manage feelings such as mad, sad, disappointment and frustration that can lead to BIG meltdowns, tantrums, shutdowns, and other challenging behaviors.
As a follow-up to this Kimochis Kick-Off event, be on the lookout in our “newsflash” for a Kimochis tool a month that will help give parents more communication tools that will help with the ups and downs with home life and school.
