NSTA Conference Highlights

RGS teachers Ms. Hall, Mr. Nebert and Mr. Street shared their takeaways from the fall National Science and Teaching Association (NSTA) Conference. They attended workshops and sessions around science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) that emphasized the importance of culturally responsive lessons and how to get all students involved no matter their level of interest or ability.
In the K-4 classrooms, the emphasis was integrating science into everything they do, such as reading and math. Science is all around us and finding ways, even if they're at recess, to point it out is just one example. They’re goal is to create more opportunities for cross-grade collaboration - similar to what is done for the kindergarten and 5th grade salmon unit every year - as the connection with older grades is important.
Watch the video below for highlights from the conference.
Thank you to the PTC for sponsoring teacher attendance to these important conferences.

Community Affinity Sessions

Last spring, we held listening sessions for community members from historically marginalized groups.  We will be holding our second session for these groups in the coming weeks. You are welcome to join even if you did not participate in a previous session. All of these meetings will be held virtually.
These sessions are only for caregivers, not for students.
Caregivers of Students of Color and Caregivers of Color:  This meeting is for caregivers, parents, and guardians of students who are Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern/North African, Latine/Latina/Latino, multiracial or biracial. This meeting is also for caregivers, parents and guardians who are in any of the above categories.
Wednesday, November 17th, 6-7 p.m. Sign-up to participate here.

REMINDERS

Safety

Students are not allowed to remain on campus after the school day without supervision of an adult. We want our children to stay safe.

Lost and Found

Our lost and found area is filling up. Please label your children’s clothing and personal items in order to reduce lost belongings.

Cold Weather

Students play outside every day despite bad weather. Please make sure they wear appropriate attire for our Oregon weather.

Appointments and Early Release

Please try to make appointments outside of the typical school day as it adds a lot of coordination for our staff to juggle different schedules. If unable to do so, please let staff know with plenty of time to notify the teacher and arrange for locating the students. Thank you for your consideration.
