School Board Meeting

The Riverdale School Board will hold a School Board Meeting on Monday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. in person in the grade school library. The meeting will also be available virtually via GoToWebinar.

Public Comment Process

Community members who would like to speak on agenda topics will be given an opportunity to do so after the board discusses that particular topic. There is also an opportunity to speak to non-agenda topics. In either case, community members may use the “raise hand” feature to then be unmuted to speak to the board.
For members of the public who wish to submit written public comment:
  • Submit an email to Chrisie Patrick before 12 p.m. on the day of the meeting.
  • IMPORTANT: Please type “Written Public Comment” in the subject line.
  • Include your full name in the body of the email.
  • Names of patrons providing input will be read during the meeting and their written public comment will be posted online via the Board agenda.
Board meeting agendas can be found on the district website under About Us >School Board and Policy. To access agendas, click the dark blue button at the top of the page “VIEW BOARD MEETING MINUTES AND AGENDAS HERE,” which will direct you to the Boardpaq website. Holidays and Celebrations

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month to our Hispanic/Latine/Latino community. See below for more information.
September 17th is Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. This holiday celebrates the ratification of the U.S. Constitution.
September 22nd is the Autumnal Equinox and thus the first official day of fall.
September 23rd is Bi Visibility Day. To our Bisexual+ community - we see you and are glad you are here at Riverdale.
Shana Tova to our Jewish community. We hope you have a lovely Rosh Hashanah from September 25th - 27th.

September 15th - October 15th is Hispanic Heritage Month

Here are some resources and events where you can learn about and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
  • The El Grito Fiestas Patrias festival (Sept. 15-16, 2022) is the Pacific Northwest’s largest celebration of its kind. El Grito celebrates the independence of former Spanish colonies in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central and South America, and their vibrant cultures. Visitors enjoy traditional mariachi and folkloric dance, live music and a wide range of food and arts vendors.
  • The inaugural JUNTOSpdx celebration (Sept. 17-Oct. 15, 2022) was created to connect, inform, inspire and celebrate Latinx Hispanic Heritage Month, founder Cristian Vargas says. Families are invited to Portland’s Old Town/Chinatown during five individually themed weekends of activities including art and vintage crafts, stories of triumph, music and dance, artisan flea markets and community. There will be local vendors, low riders, piñatas, guest speakers, dancing and more.
  • The Portland Latin American Film Festival (Sept. 22-Nov. 17, 2022) — affiliated with the Hollywood Theatre — offers a wide range of innovative films.

RSD Homecoming Week

Students at both schools have the same dress up days and are encouraged to attend each other's sporting events.
  • Monday - Pajama Day
  • Tuesday - Go, Team! Tuesday
  • Wednesday - Decade Day
  • Thursday - Repping Riverdale
  • Friday - Neon Out
On Thursday, Sept. 22, RHS students will come down to the grade school for another first: a district-wide pep assembly! Read the attached slideshow prepared by our 7/8 Leadership Team to learn more about what’s taking place September 19-24.

Conference Survey

The district would like to hear from our community on the format they prefer for upcoming conferences with their student’s teachers. Please complete this quick survey before Monday, Sept. 19 to inform our decision.

Updating Strategic Plan

School leadership collaboratively coalesced around 5 general areas of focus for the district - these would be the district priority foci. Now, we would like the community to help us define what goes in each of these buckets of work (priorities). Please read through each priority area (described on each ThoughtExchange button link) and list potential initiatives you would like to see at Riverdale.
The district will be asking for your input over the next month through ThoughtExchange surveys, later sharing out the results of what we’ve learned. There are five separate exchanges that we’re asking our entire community to complete during the month of September.
  • Learning and Instruction
  • Campus Safety & Design
  • District Identity & Sustainability
  • Community & Belonging
  • Communication & Connection
We hope to have at least 75% participation from our community, and will be asking students to participate during the school day. More information on how ThoughtExchange works is described below. These exchanges will close on Friday, Sept 30.
Superintendent Russo shares why everyone's participation is so important and how results will be shared out.

How does ThoughtExchange work?

  • Participants are asked an open-ended question
  • You can then submit as many thoughts as you'd like
  • Once you have shared your thoughts, you then go to the “star” phase where you can rate each other's thoughts (again, all anonymous) from 1 to 5. Five is strongly agree and one is strongly disagree. Participants can rate as many thoughts as they have time for
  • You do not need to make an account to participate in ThoughtExchange
