Did you know? High school electives and college credits

At the Sept. 24 board meeting, Riverdale High School Principal Paula Robinson reported some very interesting stats about high school electives and college credits. 

Did you know? 

ELECTIVES: This trimester, Trimester 1 of the 2018-19 school year, the master schedule contains 59 courses/sections (some courses have more than one section available on the schedule). Of the available classes, 16 are electives – which equates to 27 percent. Trimester 1 electives include:

  • The Global City
  • Intro to CAD
  • Yoga
  • Short Story
  • Choir (two sections)
  • PE (two sections)
  • H2O for Life
  • Beginning Programming
  • Philosophy
  • Web Design
  • Model United Nations
  • Writing 121
  • Introduction to Robotics
  • Drama

Updated: Trimester 2 electives were just announced and include:

  • The Global City
  • Mock Trial
  • Yoga
  • Books & Tea
  • Effective Public Speaking
  • War & Literature
  • Robotics
  • Art Portfolio
  • Drawing & Printmaking
  • Choir (two sections)
  • Equity & Identity: Feminism & Gender
  • Mythology Folklore
  • Weight Training
  • PE (two sections)


Remember, Riverdale students complete a full course load for all three trimesters each year. View a typical 4-year course sequence. Riverdale students exceed Oregon state graduation requirements by four credits (eight classes), by completing Riverdale's 28-credit graduation requirements.  

COLLEGE CREDITS: Last school year, 2017-18, we had 116 students earn a total of 464 college credits. Riverdale teachers, through partnerships with three Oregon colleges, teach these college classes on our campus.

  • Western Oregon University (Willamette Promise) – 26 students earned 104 college credits
  • Portland State University – 77 students earned 308 college credits
  • Portland Community College – 13 students earned 52 credits
