Riverdale celebrates International Day of the Girl

Posted Oct. 12, 2016

Riverdale High School's special International Day of the Girl assembly on Oct. 11 was organized entirely by Riverdale’s Girl Up leadership team – senior Emily Fowler and sophomores Julia Brown and Maya Ward. Girl Up is affiliated with the United Nations.

The club’s faculty advisor, Laura Keldorf, says it “is a testament to their impassioned efforts to educate their community about the marginalization, subjection and abuse girls and women in the world face today.

Speakers included:

  • Rep. Kurt Schrader, who spoke about his commitment to the work of Girl Up and the legislation he's sponsored at the national level
  • Grace Wong, a teenage activist for women’s empowerment and involvement in the STEAM field
  • Local refugees, who shed light on the plight of girls in Myanmar and the work local human rights organizations are doing to help refugees in Portland
