Riverdale Foundation Makes All the Difference

A quality education is priceless, but it comes with a price tag. Unfortunately, Oregon ranks 30th in the nation for per pupil spending on education. Even with the addition of federal and local revenue, funding for public education in Oregon provides for only the most basic programs. Fortunately, the Riverdale community has a long history of support for quality education through the Riverdale Foundation! Our Foundation enables you to act locally to provide an exceptional educational program that we all want for our children. 
The contribution from the Riverdale Foundation makes all the difference for our schools. With the additional revenue from the Foundation, every student receives an enriched education, including all the extras that schools in Portland and other areas aren’t able to provide. 
The Foundation allows us to keep our classes small so that teachers can give personalized attention to all their students. Art and music teachers inspire students to express themselves and provide preparation time for our classroom teachers to innovate and collaborate. At RHS, students choose from a wide array of elective classes not found at most schools. The Foundation also allows the District to hire an additional counselor at RHS so that college guidance can begin in 9th grade to ensure that students gain access to their ideal college. And these are just a few of the benefits that Riverdale offers thanks to these additional funds. 
Every student in the Riverdale School District benefits directly from foundation-funded programs. So, we encourage every family to invest in their children’s education by contributing to the Foundation. Please give what you can as the Foundation strives for 100% participation from our district’s families. All tax-deductible donations are greatly appreciated by the staff who serve the students of Riverdale.

College Corner

With the November 1st and 15th Early Action/Early Decision deadlines behind us, our senior class is now hard at work finishing up remaining applications for regular decision. 65% of our class applied to schools under either their Early Action or Early Decision plans, and students who haven't already heard from their schools will likely receive results during either the second or third week of December. This is one of the distinct advantages to applying under an early action plan, as students do not often begin to hear back from schools that they apply to during regular decision until mid to late March. 
Outside of our incredible Oregon schools, the trend this year has been California, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts, with about an even split between students looking at large universities and small liberal arts colleges. In California, students are primarily attracted to the UC system or schools in the Claremont Consortium, especially Pomona, Claremont McKenna, and Pitzer. In the Northeast, the most popular colleges have been Bard College, Boston College, Boston University, Fordham University, Northeastern University, and Vassar College.
As we shift our focus to regular decision, many students are busy polishing supplemental essays for their colleges, and a handful are working through applications to schools in the UK and European Union. Before the winter break, we'll have updates about decisions during the EA/ED rounds as well as more data on where our students are applying, as even many students who have already applied to schools are still looking to shore up their lists.

COVID-19 Protocols for In-Person Events

Beginning Monday, Nov. 29, Riverdale School District will begin permitting certain activities under updated requirements that safeguard participants. Community School is able to resume offering classes in our buildings, spectators can attend indoor athletic events and visitors can attend in-person open house events. As we return to hosting these events, we want to assure our attendees that we are following protocols meant to reduce the possibility of exposure to COVID-19. We ask that you review these event guidelines below. 
  • Spectators and visitors older than 12 years old will be required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (or show proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of entry).
  • Before arriving at any RSD event, all visitors/attendees must self screen for any COVID-19 symptoms and ensure they are not symptomatic. Find a self screening tool here.
  • All spectators/visitors are required to wear a tight-fitting face covering during any RSD events. Staff may take steps to limit the numbers of spectators or guests at future events. 
  • Attendees must remain in the event area at all times.
  • We strongly encourage attendees to social distance and allow at least 6 feet of space between others when possible. Remember that anyone who spends 15 cumulative minutes or more within 6 feet of someone who tests positive is considered a close contact and is subject to contact tracing measures, such as isolation and quarantine, as determined by the protocols of the county health department.
  • Attendance tracking will be utilized at all events if there is a need for contact tracing. 
  • Certain events may be livestreamed or recorded for those who are not able to attend in person.
  • Please notify the front office if you test positive for COVID-19 within two days of attending an in-person event.
  • Food or drink will not be permitted at these events while COVID-19 restrictions still apply. 
Due to the limited space in our classrooms, we are continuing to restrict classroom volunteers until further notice. 
A full reassessment of volunteer and outdoor mask protocols will be reviewed in January when transmission rates following the holiday season become available. 

School Board Meeting Monday

The Riverdale School Board will hold a Board Meeting on Monday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. via GoToWebinar. Community members who would like to speak on items not on the agenda will have that opportunity at the beginning of the meeting. In addition, community members who would like to speak on agenda topics will be given an opportunity to do so after the board discusses that particular topic. There are two options for submitting public comment: Use the “raise hand” feature to then be unmuted to read aloud your comment, or email your comment to Chrisie Patrick, and she will read it.

Youth COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics

Portland area school health clinics run by MESD are now offering Covid-19 vaccination for youth aged 5-19.

To our Sikh community, we hope you enjoy celebrating the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
November 20th is the Transgender Day of Remembrance. This day remembers those who have been killed for being transgender or gender non-conforming. 2021 has been the deadliest year on record. Read the Human Right Campaign’s report to learn more.

Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish community. Hanukkah takes place this year from November 29th to December 6th.
December 1st is World Aids Day. The purpose of this day is to unite in the fight against Aids and HIV and commemorate those who have died. 


Community Affinity Sessions

Last spring, we held listening sessions for community members from historically marginalized groups. We will be holding our second session for these groups in the coming weeks. You are welcome to join even if you did not participate in a previous session. All of these meetings will be held virtually.
These sessions are only for caregivers, not for students.

Caregivers of LGBTQIA2S+ Students and Caregivers who are LGBTQIA2S+:

This meeting is for caregivers, parents and guardians of students who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Two-Spirit, Aromantic, Pansexual, Non-binary or have their own label/non-label in regards to their gender or sexual identity. This meeting is also for caregivers, parents and guardians who are in any of the above categories.

Caregivers of Neurodiverse Students, Caregivers of Students with Disabilities, and Caregivers who are Neurodiverse or have a Disability:

This meeting is for caregivers, parents and guardians of students who have Dyslexia, Autism, ADHD, ADD, Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Auditory Processing Disorder, ED, specific learning disabilities, physical disabilities, any other categories under IDEA or a combination of these. This meeting is also for caregivers, parents and guardians who are in any of the above categories.
