STEM Paddle Raise Update

Last year’s auction paddle raise is coming to fruition. Our team has been working thoughtfully  to utilize the funds from last year’s paddle raise to bring STEM activities and materials to all K-8 students. Throughout this process, teachers have had the opportunity to talk with our STEM leaders about how the generous donations can reach and be used by each classroom. Supply chain issues have slowed the implementation process, but we are excited to announce what new additions you will see in our school by next fall.
  • First, two specialized educational 3D printers have been purchased for use by all staff. This has a reusable plastic component to it and can be used for Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Engineering/STEM challenges where design and modeling of a three dimensional structure is needed.
  • We are also excited about bringing a Stream Table to campus next year. This water table can be used for play, exploration, and teaching. This table allows for dam and bridge making, fault line exploration, NGSS engineering, and earth science learning.
  • Finally, our 5-8 classes will be purchasing lab sensors that can be used with the 3D printers and Stream Table to create more in-depth academic opportunities for our students.
Thank you all for helping make these STEM dreams happen.

Class Highlights

Students have been out in the garden taking avantage of this lovely spring weather. Students in younger grades had a great time exploring the garden, looking at bugs and flowers and also had some conversations about what to do this spring in the garden. They also did their first planting of fava bean plants.
Student Quotes:
“We hit the worm jackpot!”
“I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish as a group”
“I love Rolly Pollies so much!”

2nd Grade Staff Project

The annual 2nd grade staff project took place earlier this week. Students in Ms. Barron’s and Ms. Sager’s classes each interviewed a staff member, asking them questions such as what they do at Riverdale, what is their favorite book and most importantly, do they have pets. 2nd graders will then write up a biography, map the work space and draw a portrait of their assigned staff member.
