Public Health Information

CDC School Guidance Updates

Riverdale continues to follow local public health guidance and work closely with the Multnomah Educational Service District (MESD) and Local Public Health Authority (LPHA) to monitor the public health landscape. Schools will notify relevant groups when there is more than 20% absenteeism with at least 3 students and staff absent due to COVID as well as the entire school should there be more than 30% absenteeism with at least 10 students and staff absent.
Should the county fall into the high transmission category, Riverdale will send an email recommending (not requiring) universal use of face coverings during that time. Masks remain available for students at both schools.
The district continues to use air filters placed around the school as well as update filters in our HVAC systems.
On August 11, the CDC updated their operational guidance for schools to support safe, in-person instruction while managing the spread of COVID-19. The updated guidance is further aligned with the changes in school COVID-19 recommendations released by OHA/ODE in the spring of 2022 and emphasize a school's role in promoting equity in learning and health, particularly for groups disproportionately affected by COVID-19.
Schools will continue to make local decisions, based on local conditions to prevent and manage the spread of communicable diseases, including COVID-19 by utilizing layered mitigation strategies including:
  • Monitoring CDC COVID-19 Community Levels and local outbreaks, which helps schools make decisions about what prevention strategies to use based on the level of COVID-19 in their community. School administrators should work with local health officials to consider other local conditions and factors when deciding to implement prevention strategies.
  • Ventilation continues to be identified as an essential tool in reducing the risk of germs and contaminants spreading through the air. The CDC continues to point schools to available funding streams that can support improvements in ventilation, repairs, upgrades and replacements in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and the purchase of MERV-13 air filters.
  • Wearing a face covering reduces the risk of spreading the virus that causes COVID-19. The CDC, OHA and ODE strongly recommend that schools implement universal indoor face coverings in schools during periods of high COVID-19 transmission. When individuals choose to continue to wear face coverings at school, administrators, teachers and staff should support them by creating an environment where individual decisions to wear a face covering are honored.

OHA COVID-19 Testing Consent Form

The district continues to have a supply of COVID-19 tests available for on-site testing of those who develop symptoms during the school day. In order to be tested at school, an OHA consent form must be completed. Forms will be sent home in Friday Folders at the grade school and in advisory at the high school. More information is described on the form.

OHSU COVID-19 Screening Testing

Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) has made changes to their testing program that we participated in last year. Riverdale continues to participate in this program, and more information will be shared with our community once details are finalized.

hMPXV (Monkeypox) Information

MESD Information

With our current knowledge of how hMPXV is spread, we believe schools will be low-risk settings for transmission. Multnomah County Public Health would like to share our current understanding and guidance for hMPXV as it relates to children and schools.
